When I was a teenager, we had this phone on our kitchen wall. It was like this weird shade of green that matched our green and white kitchen. It also had a green cord that would reach all the way down the hallway and into the living room. The living room telephone had the same cord that would wrap around the room twice, I believe. Now, eventually we upgraded to a cordless phone, but before that…you were connected to something while you were on the phone. I kinda miss those days a little bit. You went “to town” as what my grandma used to call it and nobody could get in touch with you until you got back. You didn’t have notifications and text messages and phone calls coming in while you are trying to try on your new pair of Keds or get a haircut. No one had access to us when we weren’t connected to that line.
As I heard this scripture this morning on the radio while taking the kids to school, I immediately thought about that long phone cord of my youth.
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” Jeremiah 33:3
I couldn’t help but think that the phone line of prayer that is attached to heaven is just like the one I had growing up. It reaches right to the throne room of God and He always answers. Now, lets be honest. His answer may not always be what we want to hear, but He hears, friend. When we pick up the phone to call Him, it shows us that we need Him and depend on Him. He wants to show us great and mighty things, but we have to be willing to call to Him.
Pick up the phone of prayer and talk to the Lord. You won’t get his secretary. He isn’t out to lunch. You don’t get a busy signal…the line is always clear. He is going to hear you. The best part about God, is that He knows our prayers before we ask them, but we must pick up the phone and dial-in to heaven. He didn’t say, “If you pray…”, He said, “When you pray…”
Your prayers are the line connecting you to an Almighty God. You always have access to Him, friend. No matter whether you are gone “to town” for shopping, in the shower ready to start your day, driving to a doctor’s appointment, weeping beside your bed after a long, hard day…You are connected to the Father.
“Call Me”, He said.
