I’ve been doing this Bible Study on Elijah and can’t get the ravens that fed him at the brook Cherith out of my mind. This was part of our discussion last week, but my mind keeps going back to those ravens…
…a stingy bird that is smart enough to hide food from other birds, becomes a giver of God’s provision for Elijah, delivering food to him in the morning and evening for at least a year.
Why does it speak to my heart so much? Honestly, I’m not sure…but isn’t that like God? He likes to go above and beyond what we could ever ask or even think! He loves to surprise His children with His power and provision. It might be something as small as a pink desk chair in the right place at the right time…but it could be the awesome, miraculous healing of a sick loved one where little or no hope was given. Maybe it was that check in the mailbox that you didn’t know was coming when your bank account was dwindling and the bills were due.
He is unexplainable at times and that’s what I love about my God. My Father is good at sustaining me in unexpected ways that surprises my spirit and strengthens my faith.
Why do we sometimes choose to stay hungry because we won’t allow our needs to be met by an unexpected or unthinkable server to our table? Sometimes God’s waitress doesn’t look like we envisioned, but we must be willing to take the plate and lift our forks to our mouth even if we don’t understand how it was prepared.
All the while, God has been telling you to eat.
Lord, help me not to focus on where your provision will come from, how it will come or who will be the delivery driver…
…just help me to always be willing to follow your voice and accept your calling and purpose for my life. I love how you sustain me and surprise me, Lord! Help me to always have my heart open to whatever means of operating you choose…whether it makes sense or not. Your ways are higher than my ways and your thoughts are greater than mine. Help me to remember that.
Help me to remember those stingy ravens when I’m waiting on a provision from you.
