I couldn’t find what I wanted to wear today. I changed about five times, like I normally do. I wanted to be comfortable…no need to get dressed up…do I even put on makeup?
I finally settled on a shirt with Proverbs 3:5-6 on it. It’s an old one…but it’s always been a favorite. If you aren’t familiar with the verse, here it is in The Message translation:
“Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
Your barns will burst,
your wine vats will brim over.
But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.
It’s the child he loves that God corrects;
a father’s delight is behind all this.”
Y’all, I’m gonna share my heart with you for a second…
I’m standing in the bathroom drying my hair and I glance up at my shirt and just read it in a whisper to myself. As I stand there looking at myself in the mirror, God spoke to my heart…so much to the point that I am standing there fighting back tears trying to keep my mascara from running. As I am typing, my fingers are shaking and my makeup is officially ruined. You see, for the last several months (four, probably), I have felt God was leading me toward something huge…preparing me for something big. Now, I am not saying this to brag…quite the contrary.
I’m scared. When you feel God pulling you out of your comfort zone and stretching you in ways that you don’t understand, it is frightening…but in a good sort of way. I honestly don’t have a clue what it is (I have ideas, but just seeking Him for clarity) but this morning I was reminded that if I trust HIM with ALL my heart and lean not on my own understanding HE will guide me. I love the line in the above translation that says your barns will bust open and your wine vats will brim over! He is The God of overwhelming and abundance! I’ve made such a conscience effort to give the Lord everything I own, as my relationship with Him grows more intimate. It’s not easy, but the benefits of a closeness with Him is so precious! Oh my goodness, my heart just overflows in His presence right now!
Trust in the Lord, my friends. Put scripture all around you…in your car, on your walls, on your clothing…but most of all hide it in your heart! My God is a big God and He desires to take you to places far beyond where you are capable of going on your own! You don’t need to figure out everything on your own…’cause you can’t! Listen for His voice in everything you do…even if you are just drying your hair.
