“His body the bread, his blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love…”
My heart kept singing these lyrics in my head this morning as I was drawing. On Maundy Thursday, we remember the Last Supper Jesus has with His disciples before going to the cross. There, He washed His disciples feet and took of bread and wine with them to establish a new covenant. He was actually eating of the Passover meal early and there was no need for a lamb to be killed, as He would be the sacrificial lamb on the cross…our Passover (see 1 Corinthians 5:7). Some say scholars and the book of John point to Him being killed at the same approximate time that the Passover lambs were being sacrificed. That gives me cold chills!
I know it doesn’t compare, but I was sitting and thinking about the last time that I congregated with my friends over dinner…and it’s been a while. Of course, my death was the furthest thing from my mind or if this would be the last time I would see them. I am sure I appreciated the time, but did I really?
Stop and think about Jesus for a minute. He knew this would be the last time with His disciples and He was washing their feet, serving them…all the while they were still not comprehending that this would be the last time they would spend together, as He was going to die. Now that we are stuck at home and being isolated from suppers and fellowship with our loved ones…we appreciate that “last supper” we had with our friends a little more. My question is, why did it take us being away from them to appreciate the time we had with them? Would we have served them more and hugged them a little tighter knowing we may not seek them for a while? Same goes for our Savior…I believe the disciples didn’t appreciate Who Jesus was until they realized He was no longer going to be with them.
Jesus wants to dine with us daily. He wants us to come to His table, sit down and sup with Him. He isn’t physically washing our feet like He did with the disciples, but when you accept Him as your Savior, He has washed you with His cleansing blood! Tomorrow isn’t the day. Today is the day of salvation. Appreciate Him for Who He is, right now!

Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven
Jesus Messiah, Lord of all!”
