A corner of creativity and inspiration

Picking at the Knitting

I know you’ve heard it before, but God’s doesn’t make mistakes. I know it’s true, but if you are like me I stand in front of my mirror and focus on the flaws and pick myself apart inch by inch.

I’ll start with the right eyebrow that looks nothing like the left one. I’ve watched every video of those beauty bloggers on YouTube, but after every tutorial the eyebrows that should be sisters, still end up looking like fourth cousins.

Oh, the cellulite. We just won’t go there because God didn’t make that. It’s all my fault.

My nose has a hump on it that looks like that lady on the bicycle from The Wizard of Oz. Every time I get on my bike with intention to take a ride around the neighborhood, rolling through my mind is her pedaling with all her might with that little dog in the basket…so, it stays in the garage. Not riding that bike has contributed to that cellulite…but we ain’t talking about that.

Can we talk about the age spots? It started as a teenager in a cute bikini slathering myself in that tanning lotion in the brown bottle that smelled like coconuts and made your skin look like you went through the glazing machine at Krispy Kreme. Now, here I am in my forties in leggings in 90 degree heat and slathering SPF 1000 on my face counting the ever increasing freckles and wishing I had a Krispy Kreme doughnut. There’s the cellulite again.

I won’t bore you with my one lazy eye that matches the crazy, fourth cousin eyebrow and how my left leg turned in when I was younger which required me to wear braces on my legs like Forrest Gump. I couldn’t make it all up if I tried.

What I see as flaws are actually the fingerprints of a God that doesn’t make mistakes. I am fearfully and wonderfully made, even if my mirror reflects a less than desirable image back at me. There will always be things that we can find wrong with ourselves, but God knew me before he formed me in the womb. Scripture says that “He knit me together in my mother’s womb”, so why do I continue to try to pick apart something that God put together so perfectly?

Sister, let’s make a conscious effort to remind ourselves and each other that we are designed by the Master of the Universe and we are His masterpiece. A masterpiece is the greatest of one’s work…so that means of all the things God created, we are His greatest accomplishment done with excellent skill and thought. When we choose to focus on the flaws and not the fingerprints, we are degrading the work of The Master.

Forgetting the cellulite and admiring the craftsmanship…all while eating doughnuts and using wrinkle cream.
