Dull Ax

I feel like God has been trying to teach me so much lately about wisdom…because everything I read goes back to it.

Wisdom isn’t found anywhere other than in God’s Word, so I have spent many months soaking it in and trying to grow in Christ more each day. I have learned so much about how foolish I truly am and even after spending close to 20 years as a Christian, most of my time was spent trying to obtain perfection…which is impossible…and relying on my own knowledge.

My knowledge sucks.

Things I thought were good for me, were actually destroying me spiritually and those things that I chose not to do, could have been fueling my spiritual fire and drawing me closer to the warmth of my Savior! This morning in Ecclesiastes Chapter 10, Solomon talks about none other that wisdom and this verse reminded me so much of myself:

“If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen its edge, then one must exert more strength; however, the advantage of wisdom is that it brings success.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10)

Well, it was like God hit me over the head with my own dull ax and said, “You kept chopping away at your life with that dull ax and look where it got you…exerting way more strength than you needed to. Sharpening your ax with the truth in My Word will allow you to make fewer swings to get an even greater result!”

We spend so much energy trying to do things on our own, with a dull ax, because we refuse to spend time with Jesus everyday. When we sharpen our ax with the Word of God and make a conscious effort to grow in Him, we have enough wood to keep the fire going throughout the day. Even better, when we face a situation where we can choose to go right (wisdom) or left (foolishness), we will no longer be counter-productive…or sitting in a forest surrounded by “trees” that God gave us, and being ill-equipped to make them useful for building the fire for Jesus in our soul!
