“The beauty of the vessel comes NOT from the clay, but the skill of the potter.”
My pastor said the above quote Sunday morning as he was talking about the story of Jeremiah going to the potter’s house. I jotted it down in my Bible quickly because I felt like I would need to remind myself of that quite often. It resonated in my soul that without God, we are nothing but a lump of clay waiting to be molded. We can sit on the pottery wheel of life and not allow God to shape us and make us into something useful for Him…but that isn’t why we were created. We were created to worship and magnify Him…be useful. Isn’t that why a potter makes those vases, bowls and pots? To be useful…to show the beauty he created. He also wants the credit for it…he’s not going to do all the work and stamp someone else’s name on the bottom.
I was reading about how a pottery wheel works and it says that to get the clay ready to be shaped, pressure must be applied to the clay and it must be in the center of the wheel for the potter to be able to give it form and shape. Hmmmm….how can we be more like Christ without a little pressure? How can we be more like Christ if we aren’t in the center of His Word? Sometimes a little pressure is needed to make you more effective for Him.
If you remember only one thing from reading this, let it be that we are just clay in the potter’s hand. He has the skill…we just have to allow Him to make us what He would have us to be. We are nothing without Him…He is who makes you beautiful, useful, and worthy. Allow Him to throw you on His wheel and turn you into an amazing piece that is stamped with the Holy Spirit. That makes you a priceless piece…able to function in so many ways for The One who created you!
