The last thing I wrote in my notes during evening service was, “Be careful about doing what is right in your eyes.” I wrote down several scripture references, but the one that I felt drawn to was Judges 17:6…”In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did as they saw fit.” Basically, everyone did what they thought was right. They listened to their own voice of reason and created their own code of conduct. It was mentioned four times in the book of Judges that there was no king. Technically, there was a King (God), but of course he was rejected by the Israelites and they just went their own way. We know what that brought.
Unfortunately, isn’t that today’s world? Yes, there are people still seeking God and His ways and there was in the days of Samuel, who is thought to have written Judges. But, as a whole generation in general, aren’t we just led by what we think is right? We say we “believe” in God, but we don’t take the time to truly know Him and let Him rule in our lives, so we are tossed around in a blender of doctrine, social acceptance, our conscience and what our parents told us what right. I know Lauren Daigle (Christian recording artist) took a lot of flack recently from Christians when asked the question if homosexuality was a sin. She answered with:
“I can’t honestly answer that,” Daigle replied. “I have too many people that I love, and they are homosexuals.”
She went on to explain that since she’s not God, she can’t say one way or another. Instead, people should just “read the Bible and find out” for themselves.”
Did she do what was right in God’s eyes or what was right in her own eyes? Would you have answered the question differently? Would I have answered the question differently? Was she being politically correct? Was she straddling the fence?
I have read so many comments on what “should have been said”. I have sat and thought about how I would respond, because I have friends that are gay (even reading this post, probably) and I absolutely love my friends, too. You probably have friends/family that are, too. I’ve come to the conclusion that my response on this and ANYTHING in scripture would have simply been:
“Ask God.”
I can tell you my opinion, but it doesn’t matter…only God’s counts. I can quote scripture, but we must work out our own salvation. If you completely trust Him and ask with a desire to live a life that is pleasing to Him, He will not have you mixed up. I can promise you God is clear, but we are good and mixing things up real good and confusing ourselves. Humans are good blenders…at blurring things up. We like doing what we think is right in our own eyes. We can justify anything to fit our agenda. I know, because I have done it myself in areas of my own life. But I can assure you, if you take the time to just simply, “ask God” and study His Word with an open mind, He WILL reveal to you. You don’t have to rely on yourself, rely on Him. You won’t need me to give you my opinion, because He has revealed the truth to you. He doesn’t make mistakes and He will not fail you. My answer would probably fail you and by the comments of so many people, Lauren’s comments did the same. But, God never fails.
But I will leave you with this. Look how faithful she has been for the kingdom in singing for the Lord and I’m sure many other things…and then let’s ask ourselves, how faithful have we been? Look how faithful God has been to us, even when we weren’t faithful to Him. He loves you more than anything and anyone…EVER. I will just try and love like Jesus, but I know at that too, I will fail. You see my point? It all goes back to God…’cause we are always going to fail in comparison.
Stop judging.
Stop trying to be God in your life and other people’s lives.
We must stop floating in the blender of confusion…we don’t know it all. Start asking God. Oh how clear things would be for us all if we just simply asked God.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8
