This past Sunday, my Sunday School teacher made a statement about seeing God. He said, “How much do you want to see?” He also used a quick reference to a horse with blinders. I immediately grabbed my pen and wrote those words on an index card. I’ve been pondering on that thought since then and when I sat down this morning to study, God gave me this Scripture from Proverbs to focus my attention on for a few minutes.
“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Don’t swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.” Proverbs 4:25-27
That race horse I wanted to draw in my Bible as a reminder is the absolute visual of this verse inside my brain! You see, horses have peripheral vision, so when they are running, they have a tendency to go off course unless they are forced to remain focused. That will preach right there! We have to remain focused. It isn’t easy sometimes to stay focused on the path that God has for us…our race in life, per se, but if we stay focused on Him…your way is sure. Take your eyes off Jesus for any amount of time and if you are like me, you start second guessing, trip over your own feet or head in the absolute wrong direction!
When reading about racing horses, I learned that the jockey really has very little control over the horse. Those blinders are so important in keeping the horse focused on its path ahead and to block out what is beside or behind the horse. It’s actually for the safety of the jockey, too. A runaway horse is taking the jockey with him! Aren’t we a lot like that jockey? We really ain’t got no control! I know that’s not proper English, but it has more emphasis that way in my country-little brain. I can just hear God yelling that out to me…’cause I’m one of those control freaks…ya know, what I mean? It’s easy to lose control of ourselves, our purpose, our path when we are focused on Jesus…wearing those spiritual blinders. It’s easy to be distracted from those beside us (in our ears) or what happened yesterday. That distraction keeps us from moving forward. God doesn’t want you looking backwards, running off on your own or listening to everyone else. Focus on Him. Don’t be swerving to the right or the left…no one ever reached the finish line by running anything but forward!
We let everything affect around us affect how we see God and the path He has placed upon our life. If you are having trouble finding your way today, hone your focus in on Jesus.
Remember…
We are not in control.
Be bridled up, blinders on and focused straight toward the finish line. Let go of the distractions of this life.
See God clearly today…and your ways will be sure.
