I am sure when Mary was anointing the feet of Jesus with that expensive perfume (worth a year’s salary), she was at a place of sincere gratitude. She has just seen her brother Lazarus brought back from the dead. I can sympathize a little with her, because I know how she feels losing a brother. I would have loved nothing more than 8 years ago to see him alive and well again after the sting of his death. I’m sure she was so grateful, humbled and wanted to just sit at the feet of Jesus and worship him with everything she had.
Thinking about how her heart must have felt, it brought me to ponder the thought of gratitude in my daily life. How often are we willing to sacrifice everything for Jesus. I’m pretty sure that the perfume that was placed on Jesus feet was the family “retirement plan”. It was put up as an investment…a life savings. I don’t know about you, but that gives me cold chills. She has just witnessed Jesus save her brother’s life and she was the one preparing Him for death to save the lives of humanity! That puts me in tears as I type this! Oh to have that much gratitude for Jesus and His sweet-smelling gift of grace on a daily basis…sacrificing the very hairs on our head to serve Him wholly and completely!
I want that the fragrance of gratitude to fill my home. Gratitude that fills the air around me…remembering daily what Your lavish gift of grace cost.
