Ever met someone who is always hungry or thirsty? They just can’t seem to get enough food or drink to keep them satisfied? I’m sure at some point we have all been there. On a hot, summer day while outside in the scorching sun, there isn’t enough water to keep me feeling hydrated. Or maybe you left the house without eating breakfast, skipped lunch and now it’s supper time and you are trying your best not to eat everything in your pantry, because your stomach is gnawing on your backbone!?!
That’s some serious physical hunger that we can temporarily fill until our bodies burn up the calories from our last meal and we do it all over again. Did you realize that we have a spiritual hunger, too? Many times we take our spiritual hunger and try to satisfy it with the bread of this world…
-Relationships/Sex
-Material possessions
-Drugs/Alcohol
-Food
-Money
-Work
I could probably list lots of other things, but you get the idea. All that stuff is not going to satisfy you. Maybe for a season, but eventually you will be hungry again for something else. Nothing that comes from this world will ever satisfy you.
Well Ashlee, what will?
I’m so glad you asked! 😉
Jesus makes a statement in John 6, that He is the Bread of Life. He is saying this after He fed the people with the loaves and the fishes and crossed the Sea of Galilee. The crowd of people followed him after being fed to the other side of the sea. Jesus used this moment to talk to the people that were so concerned about physical hunger that they missed the answer to their spiritual hunger that was standing right in front of them! He tells them, “I am the bread of life. No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again.”
People haven’t changed since the days when Jesus walked the earth.
-We look to fill ourselves with the figurative breads of this world, when Jesus says come to Me and eat of “this bread”, “living bread”.
-We know that we can survive on the bread for our belly as it provides essential nutrients, but Jesus is essential for life. You can survive, but you cannot LIVE without Him!
-We know that physical bread will perish, just as the manna in the wilderness (John 6:49), but in Jesus we have eternal life! The Bread of Life is eternal!
-Throughout these verses, I seen the word “everyone” in the particular translation I am reading. Do not forget that you have access to sit at the table, too! Jesus is for everyone…and everyone includes YOU.
Stop scarfing down all the junk that will leave you feeling empty, broken and dead inside. Eat of the bread that offers eternal satisfaction, fullness and life!
You will never be hungry again.
