I think I’ve gotten about five or six watermelons from different people this summer. At one point, I had more watermelon than could be consumed by humans. It’s takes time to open it up and slice it in bite-size pieces, but it’s so worth it! I love that sweet taste! We had so much, I ended up paying it forward by giving one away, because I didn’t want it to go bad! It wasn’t doing any good sitting on my kitchen counter or rolling around in the back of my car.
As I was reading in Psalm 34 this morning, David says in verse 8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” I’m not quite sure, but I thought about that watermelon and how it is so much like God’s Word.
It doesn’t do any good riding around in the car or sitting on the table. You got to open it up. Get inside to the sweet stuff. God’s Word is so sweet. I like opening it up each day and finding a bite-sized piece that I can share with someone (hence these long Facebook posts you see) or tuck it in my heart for when I need peace, love, comfort or joy.
To me, eating watermelon is an experience. I can remember as a kid, pulling out the newspaper on the picnic table, sticking my face into a huge slice, and letting the juice run down my arms. You leave changed after eating watermelon. Sticky, smiling and a belly full! And if you are like me, you probably feel like you need a change of clothes, too! But man, what an experience that leaves you craving it again!
God’s Word is to be experienced, too. When you read and apply the pages to your life, you can’t help but be changed! It’s supposed to saturate your life, leave you with a full heart and wanting more! There have been so many times I couldn’t wait to sit down in the morning and read the Bible. I want to see what God has at the table for me…I know it’s gonna be sweet!
Lastly, those pesky seeds. I was always told not to eat them. We all know why…we don’t want a watermelon growing in our belly! Good thing is, the Lord says He wants the Word to grow in us! We shouldn’t skip over anything from Genesis to maps. It’s all good stuff and can sprout up vines that will produce much fruit!
If you want to experience more of the sweetness of God, you can find it within the pages of His Word. He is living water”melon”. That leaves you so much more satisfied!
