On Track

Over the last several weeks I have been reading in 1 and 2 Kings. I am usually more of a Psalms or New Testament girl, but as we were riding to church yesterday, we listened to a sermon online and it was from 2 Kings 7…exactly where I had been studying a few days earlier! God is definitely using these chapters to prune me!

The more I study God’s Word, I realize that the Old Testament is packed with some great examples of people I have never even heard of!! Today it was Joash. He became king at seven years old and under his reign, his greatest accomplishment was his efforts to repair the Lord’s temple that had been looted and desecrated. He stayed on track because he listened to the wise advice from the priest Jehoiada and put his trust in God. Well, after Jehoiada died, Joash decided to listen to some unwise counsel that came to pay homage to him. They abandoned God, the temple and worshipped Asherah. Joash had allowed his trust to be shifted from God to people.

How often do we do that? I am sure that we all have some Godly people in our lives that we can say we trust. But do we rely on their advice instead of what God would have us to do? Do we study His Word? Do we pray for direction and guidance? Do we listen for God to speak to our hearts?

It is easy to get off track when we allow others to guide our judgement…just like Joash. But if we put our trust in God and allow him to steer us, we will not get off track. God is the conductor and you can always count on the conductor to stay on the tracks. When we try to take control, that’s when we see derailment and an absolute train wreck!
